Day 5- Our Trek Finally Begins

Our day began with hopes that we could fly to Lukla and get started on schedule. Not so much. The backlog of hundreds of stuck trekkers due to bad weather was impossible to work off with only three planes with 17 seats each.

Some very large teams never got started.

Teams from all over the world.

Airport chaos.

It seemed early on that our best chance was a helicopter. They said they were also swamped but that they would try to fly us out that morning. By 4:00 PM, we were still waiting and the weather was turning on us. Just when we were ready to give up, we learned that our “Khumbu Taxi” was on the way. The helicopter swooped in, picked us up and was soon climbing to over 9,000  feet toward Lukla.

Mikie Martel enjoys the front seat.

As we climbed into the Himalayas, the weather turned worse and night was closing in. The pilot dropped us off in a small village, a 3 hour hike from our destination. To make the story short, we began our trek there. We hiked 5.2 miles in 5 hours in the dark with our headlamps in a light rain and enjoyed every moment.

This woman made the most delicious soup for us at 9:00 at night. Our Nepali guide, Jit, and porters, Jungue and Padam are seated on the right.

At this moment, we are now safe and resting in our warm sleeping bags and beds. Early in the morning, we head out for our long trek to Namche Bazaar.

Our second time at the Green Village Guest House

I have put up a few pictures and will add more later. I bid you all a good night from the Everest region in the Himalayas. We all feel very fortunate and grateful to our Nepali team that we are on our way.
